Crisis and traumatic events take a serious toll. It is common for people dealing with crisis to experience strong emotional reactions or seemingly no reaction at all. Understanding normal responses to overwhelming or traumatic events can help you cope better and move forward on the path to recovery.
I have had extensive experience in trauma related counselling, crisis intervention and traumatic event debriefing, in the emergency room, schools, community and in the workplace. Some of the issues I have dealt with in both crisis intervention and psychotherapy include:
- Accidental and sudden death
- Bereavement
- Suicide
- Homicide
- Workplace injuries
- Violent crime
- Sexual harassment, assault, rape
- Physical assault
- Unwanted pregnancy
- Miscarriage
- Witnessing trauma
- Compassion fatigue
- Surgery related trauma
- Accidents
- Loss of pet
- Threat & risk of violence assessment
If you are in crisis, it is best to seek help sooner than later. Making connections with family, friends and a therapist who will listen to you, will strengthen your resilience.
Try to keep in mind that tragedy, trauma, and other adverse situations are not insurmountable; in fact, people often find that through facing a tragedy or hardship they learn something new about themselves, develop unexpected strengths and they build stronger relationships.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, if you are having difficulty looking forward, or if you are having trouble reaching out and making connections with others, it may be helpful to see me.
